Freelance vs Agenzia Web: Cosa Conviene nel 2026 - Ikwaba

A freelance web designer is the right choice when you want one point of contact, quick turnaround and a lower price for a business website, an online store or a landing page. A web agency makes sense when the project needs many skills at once: a large portal, ongoing ad campaigns, a dedicated marketing team. For most small businesses and professionals, an experienced freelancer does the same work as an agency for less, as long as you choose well.

I’m saying this as a freelancer: I’m Toure Tia Kevin, a web developer based in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Below is an honest comparison, including the cases where I’d point you to an agency.

What’s the difference between a freelancer and a web agency?

A freelancer is an independent professional who handles the project from start to finish. When needed, they bring in trusted partners, such as a photographer or a copywriter. An agency is a company with several people and separate roles: sales, project manager, designers, developers, marketing specialists.

These prices are indicative: they vary with location, experience and what the quote includes.

When should you hire a freelance web designer?

  • The project is clear and mid-sized: business website, online store, landing page, redesign.
  • You want to talk to the person doing the work, with nobody in between.
  • The budget is limited: with a freelancer you pay for the work, not the overhead.
  • You need someone who stays after launch for updates and small changes.

When should you hire a web agency?

  • The project is large and deadlines are tight: you need several people working together.
  • You need ongoing, varied services: advertising, social media, content, PR.
  • You have an in-house marketing team that wants a structured supplier with defined contracts and processes.

How do you choose a freelance web designer?

The risk with a freelancer is choosing badly, because everything rests on one person. These checks reduce it.

  1. Look at their live sites. Open them on your phone, check the speed and the attention to detail. Mine are on the portfolio page.
  2. Ask who will own the site. Domain, hosting and logins should be in your name.
  3. Have the quote explained: number of pages, copy, photos, basic SEO, training, support after launch.
  4. Ask how they work after delivery: who updates the site, what changes cost, how fast they reply.
  5. Check that they can say no. A professional talks you out of features you don’t need instead of adding them to the quote.

What are the warning signs?

  • A price far below the market with no explanation of what’s missing: usually SEO, security or support.
  • No sites to show, or only templates and mock-ups.
  • The domain registered in their name: if you part ways, the site stays with them.
  • No contract or written quote.
  • Promises of guaranteed Google rankings: nobody can guarantee them.

How much does a freelance web designer cost?

It depends on what they build. For reference, these are my prices:

ProjectPrice
Landing page€400–800
Business website€800–2,500
Online store€2,000–8,000
Maintenance and hosting€30–80 a month

How I work

I handle every project myself: first call, quote, design, development, launch and support afterwards. When a project needs skills I don’t have, such as professional photography or ongoing ad campaigns, I say so straight away and tell you who can do it. I work with businesses in Italy and France, like the pizzeria I Love Pizza on the French Riviera, and I always recommend putting the domain and hosting in the client’s name.

If you’re planning a new site, you’ll find what the business website service includes. The first call is free: write to me and within 24 hours I’ll tell you whether your project suits a freelancer or whether an agency is a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a freelancer handle a large project?

Yes, if the project is split into phases and the freelancer has trusted partners for the parts they don’t cover. For a portal with many features to deliver all at once, a team is a better fit.

What happens if the freelancer is no longer available?

If the domain, hosting and logins are in your name and the site runs on widely used tools like WordPress, another professional can pick up the work without starting over.

Should I pick a freelancer near me?

It helps for in-person meetings, but it isn’t necessary: most of the work happens on video calls. What matters more is that they know your market and reply quickly.
