Mistral AI is a French company, founded in Paris in 2023, that builds generative AI models: the same kind of technology as ChatGPT or Claude, but designed and run in Europe. For a business it’s interesting for three reasons: a ready-to-use assistant (Le Chat), models available through an API to connect to your business software, and several open models you can install on your own servers. Below is what it offers, when it makes sense and what to check before using it with company data.

What does Mistral AI offer?

ProductWhat it’s forWho it suits
Le Chatweb and mobile assistant, like ChatGPT: writes, summarises, searches, reads documentsteams that want to use AI straight away, with no development
La Plateforme (API)Mistral models to connect to websites, business software and automationscompanies that want AI inside their processes
Open modelsdownloadable models to run on your own serversanyone who doesn’t want data to leave the company
Specialised modelsfor example for code (Codestral) and voice (Voxtral)projects with specific needs

The line-up changes often: model names and plans are updated several times a year, so check the official site before deciding.

Is Mistral AI free?

Le Chat has a free plan with usage limits, plus paid plans for individuals and teams. The API is pay-as-you-go, based on how much text is processed. Open models can be downloaded with no licence fee, but you need suitable servers to run them, and that’s the real cost.

Mistral AI or ChatGPT: which should you choose?

There’s no outright winner: it depends on the task and on the data involved.

  • Answer quality: for writing, summarising and answering questions, Mistral’s main models are competitive. For very complex tasks, test several models on the same real case before choosing.
  • Where the data goes: Mistral is a European company and lets you keep data in Europe; with open models, it never has to leave your servers.
  • Cost: Mistral’s API is often among the cheapest for the same task, which matters as volumes grow.
  • Ecosystem: ChatGPT has more ready-made integrations and more people who already know how to use it.

When does it make sense for a small business?

  1. You handle sensitive data: health records, contracts, customer information. An open model on your own server, or a European provider, lowers the risk.
  2. You need to automate repetitive tasks at volume: sorting emails, pulling data from documents, writing product descriptions. Here the cost per request matters.
  3. You want an internal assistant over your documents: manuals, price lists, procedures.
  4. You need voice: phone systems and transcription, with the dedicated voice models.

If your team already uses another assistant and is happy with it, switching just because it’s European is rarely worth it: start from the processes that waste the most time.

What to check about your data

AI needs clear rules, whatever the provider.

  • Read the plan’s terms: free plans of AI services may use conversations to improve their models; business plans and APIs usually don’t. Always check the setting.
  • Decide what never goes in: customers’ personal data, passwords, confidential information.
  • Keep a list of the AI tools in use in the company and who uses them: it’s also the first step towards the EU AI Act.
  • Tell customers when they’re talking to a chatbot or reading AI-generated content, as the European AI regulation requires.

How do you use Mistral AI in a business?

There are three levels, from the simplest to the most complete.

  1. Le Chat for the team: a business account and the built-in features, with a few usage rules and some training.
  2. API integration: the model works inside your tools, for example sorting incoming emails, drafting replies or reading invoices. This needs a developer.
  3. A model on your own servers: for cases where data must not leave the company. It takes a bigger upfront investment.

This is the kind of work I do with the AI and automation service: I pick the model based on the task, cost and privacy, write the scripts that connect it to the software you already use, and check that the results are reliable. If you need an assistant on your website, see the AI chatbot too. For a practical example, read how to automate social media posts with AI.
