A small business website usually costs €800 to €2,500 for a brochure site, €2,000 to €8,000 for an online store and €400 to €800 for a single landing page. On top of that come the costs that recur every year: domain, hosting and maintenance, usually €30 to €80 a month when a professional looks after them. The final price depends on how many pages you need, who writes the copy and what the site has to do.

I’m Toure Tia Kevin, a web developer in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. The prices in this article are the ones I charge, and you’ll find them on my service pages too.

How much a website costs: the table

Type of siteTypical priceWho it’s for
Landing page€400–800a campaign, a product, an event
Brochure site€800–2,500local businesses, professionals, tradespeople
WooCommerce store€2,000–8,000anyone who wants to sell online
Web apps and management softwarequoted per projectbookings, client areas, internal processes
Mobile appquoted per projectiOS and Android from one codebase

These are freelance prices. An agency with several roles (account manager, designer, developer) often charges more for the same kind of site: I compare the two in freelance web designer vs agency.

What pushes the price up or down

  1. Number of pages: a 5-page site and a 30-page site aren’t the same job, especially if every page has its own content.
  2. Copy and photos: if you supply them, the cost goes down; if they need writing and optimising for Google, it goes up. It’s often the most underestimated item.
  3. Custom design or template: a design built around your brand costs more than an adapted theme, but it sets you apart from competitors.
  4. Features: bookings, members’ area, several languages, links to management software or a CRM.
  5. SEO from the start: page structure, structured data, speed. A site nobody finds on Google is a cost, not an investment.

Brochure site

A brochure site presents the business, its services and how to get in touch. For most local businesses it’s the right choice: it costs €800 to €2,500 and goes live in a few weeks. One example is the site I built for I Love Pizza, a pizzeria in France.

Online store

An online store costs more because it handles products, payments, shipping, invoices and customer data. With WooCommerce my price is €2,000 to €8,000, depending on catalogue and features. The breakdown, from plugins to payment fees, is in how much a WooCommerce store costs.

Landing page

A landing page is a single page built for one goal: collecting enquiries from an ad campaign, launching a product, promoting an event. It costs €400 to €800. If you’ll use it with Google Ads, read how much Google Ads costs too.

Web apps and mobile apps

When you need bookings, client areas or internal workflows, it’s no longer a website but a web app. The price depends on the features; I set it after a free analysis, split into phases. The same goes for mobile apps, which I build with React Native: one project for iOS and Android.

Costs that recur every year

ItemTypical cost
Domain€10–30 a year
Hostingfrom a few euros to a few tens of euros a month, depending on the type
Managed maintenance and hosting€30–80 a month
Paid theme or plugin licencesfrom nothing to a few hundred euros a year

My maintenance and hosting service includes hosting on dedicated OVH servers. What maintenance covers, and what happens if you skip it, is in the guide to website maintenance.

How to read a quote

A good website quote:

  • breaks down the items: design, development, copy, SEO, training;
  • says what’s excluded: hosting, licences, photos, translations;
  • gives timings and what you need to supply;
  • makes clear who owns the site: the domain and logins should be in your name;
  • explains what happens after launch: support, updates, changes.

Be wary of quotes with one figure and no breakdown: it’s the easiest way to run into extra costs halfway through.

If you want guidance for your industry, I’ve written guides for restaurants, hotels and B&Bs, medical practices, lawyers and professionals, shops, hairdressers and beauty salons and tradespeople. To work out whether you really need a site, read why a business needs a website.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a website for free?

Website builders start at nothing or a few euros a month, but the limits come quickly: domain, customisation, speed, SEO. For a business that wants customers from Google, a custom site pays off.

How long does it take to build a website?

A brochure site usually takes 2 to 5 weeks, an online store 1 to 3 months. Much depends on how quickly the copy and photos arrive.

Is the site mine once it’s finished?

It should be. Ask for the domain and admin logins to be in your name: that way you can move the site or change provider whenever you like.
